Heat content changes are mainly driven by subsurface temperature variations in the upper 100 m, influenced by air temperature, evaporation, and wind stress. Freshwater content changes are largely controlled by salinity shifts in the halocline (40–120 m), with key drivers being saline inflows, precipitation, and zonal wind stress.

This paper tracks some key indicators of global warming through time, from 1850 through to the end of 2023. It is designed to give an authoritative estimate of global warming to date and its causes. We find that in 2023, global warming reached 1.3 °C and is increasing at over 0.2 °C per decade. This is caused by all-time-high greenhouse gas emissions.

Our hope is that this becomes an important annual publication that policymakers, media, scientists and the public can refer to.

Climate change is caused by the accumulated heat in the Earth system, with the land storing the second largest amount of this extra heat. Here, new estimates of continental heat storage are obtained, including changes in inland-water heat storage and permafrost heat storage in addition to changes in ground heat storage. We also argue that heat gains in all three components should be monitored independently of their magnitude due to heat-dependent processes affecting society and ecosystems.

Earth's climate is out of energy balance, and this study quantifies how much heat has consequently accumulated over the past decades (ocean: 89 %, land: 6 %, cryosphere: 4 %, atmosphere: 1 %). Since 1971, this accumulated heat reached record values at an increasing pace. The Earth heat inventory provides a comprehensive view on the status and expectation of global warming, and we call for an implementation of this global climate indicator into the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake.

Global mean sea-level change observed from 1993 to 2016 (mean rate of 3.05 mm yr−1) matches the combined effect of changes in water density (thermal expansion) and ocean mass. Ocean-mass change has been assessed through the contributions from glaciers, ice sheets, and land water storage or directly from satellite data since 2003. Our budget assessments of linear trends and monthly anomalies utilise new datasets and uncertainty characterisations developed within ESA's Climate Change Initiative.

We review the advancements in our capabilities to predict the green ocean in the frame of the European Copernicus Marine Service since its start in 2015 and for the five European seas, the Arctic and Global oceans. The evolutions of the prediction systems, delivered products and computing resources requirements are reviewed. Recommendations for future developments are proposed based on a SWOT analysis of current CMEMS green ocean prediction systems and products.

Ocean acidification is explored in the Adélie Land coastal region in East Antarctica. The region is a permanent CO2 sink leading to a positive increase of total CO2 concentrations and to a progressive decrease of pH and aragonite Ωar. The lowest surface Ωar of 1.2 was observed in winter 2024, a critical limit for some marine species such as pteropod. A projection in the future suggests that aragonite saturation state will occur as soon as 2055 in the Adélie Land region.

The western Mediterranean suffered unprecedented marine heatwaves in 2022. We focus on the coastal ocean, which is highly vulnerable to global warming and extreme events. Using satellite and in situ observations, strong spatiotemporal variations in the marine heatwave characteristics have been observed in 2022 and over the last decade. Differences between datasets also invite us to continue with efforts to sustain multi-platform observing systems from open-ocean to coastal ocean waters.

This work analyses the propagation of the 2022 marine heatwave from the surface to 2000 m depth of the water column in the Mediterranean Sea. The results show that the temperature anomaly during the summer of 2022 varies between 0.88 and 2.92 °C. However, this heat stored in the surface layer is distributed in the water column during the following fall. This warming may enhance variations of the circulation of the surface and deep currents, which in turn may have an impact on the climate.

A noticeable cold spell occurred in Eastern Europe at the beginning of 2022 and was the main driver of intense deep-water formation and the associated transport of nutrients to the surface. Southeast of Crete, the availability of both light and nutrients in the surface layer stimulated an anomalous phytoplankton bloom. In the area, chlorophyll concentration (a proxy for bloom intensity) and primary production were considerably higher than usual, suggesting possible impacts on fishery catches.

Also, we shed light on the first steps of learning how MHWs behave under the ocean surface through the 2022 Bay of Biscay events. Our results show at least two extreme MHW events for the Bay of Biscay and the Celtic Sea for the year 2022. Moreover, we found that there is a seasonal modulation in mean MHW depth for the Bay of Biscay.

Aim of the Oxygen Deficiency Index (ODI) blueprint is to inform about the water-quality in the North and Baltic Seas by using observations and model-simulations. The ODI helps us to calculate the probability if low-oxygen conditions might occur, with low ODI values indicating a low risk and vice-versa. We show that the ODI is able to forecast oxygen deficiency zones between 30 to 75 days. Important points in our study were the simplicity of application, deployment and an easy interpretation.

The synthesis of biogenic silica frustules makes them peculiar among phytoplankton but also dependent on dissolved silicate (DSi). Regular oceanographic surveys show declining DSi concentrations since the mid-1990s. With a model-based approach, we show that weakening deep winter convection was the proximate cause of DSi decline in the LS.

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) interacts with the ambient light and gives the waters of the Mediterranean Sea their colour. We propose a novel parameterization of the CDOM cycle, whose parameter values have been optimized by using the data of the monitoring site BOUSSOLE. Nutrient and light limitations for locally produced CDOM caused aCDOM(λ) to covary with chlorophyll, while the above-average CDOM concentrations observed at this site were maintained by allochthonous sources.

Recently the satellite SSS from SMOS was developed in the Arctic region. In this study, we first evaluate the impact of assimilating these satellite data in an Arctic reanalysis system. It shows that SSS errors are reduced by 10–50 % depending on areas, encouraging its use in a long-time reanalysis to monitor the Arctic water cycle.

The formation of dense water in the Nordic Seas is sensitive to the properties of the northward flowing Atlantic Water entering the Nordic Seas to the south. We find that the unprecedented freshwater anomaly in the North Atlantic recent years caused the dense water formed in the Barents Sea to have the lowest density in recorded history.

We found surface melt was always more frequent when it was cloudy but was not universally faster or slower than under clear-sky conditions. The pilot area used is the Baltic Sea area and discharges of bilge, ballast, sewage, wash water as well as stern tube oil are reported for the year 2012. This work also reports the release of SOx scrubber effluents. This technique may be used by ships to comply with tight sulfur limits inside Emission Control Areas, but it also introduces a new pollutant stream from ships to the sea.
