We find that in 2023, global warming reached 1.3 °C and is increasing at over 0.2 °C per decade. This is caused by all-time-high greenhouse gas emissions.

Here, new estimates of continental heat storage are obtained, including changes in inland-water heat storage and permafrost heat storage in addition to changes in ground heat storage. We also argue that heat gains in all three components should be monitored independently of their magnitude due to heat-dependent processes affecting society and ecosystems.

Earth's climate is out of energy balance, and this study quantifies how much heat has consequently accumulated over the past decades (ocean: 89 %, land: 6 %, cryosphere: 4 %, atmosphere: 1 %). Since 1971, this accumulated heat reached record values at an increasing pace. The Earth heat inventory provides a comprehensive view on the status and expectation of global warming, and we call for an implementation of this global climate indicator into the Paris Agreement’s Global Stocktake.

Ocean-mass change has been assessed through the contributions from glaciers, ice sheets, and land water storage or directly from satellite data since 2003. Our budget assessments of linear trends and monthly anomalies utilise new datasets and uncertainty characterisations developed within ESA's Climate Change Initiative.

On the Scotian Shelf, temperatures and parameters of extreme events present layered structures in the water column, long-term trends, and sharp increases around 2012. Quantification of extreme warm (cold) conditions in 2012 (1998) supports previous studies on the impacts of these conditions on several marine life species.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are intensifying due to climate change. In 2023, the Copernicus Marine forecast system tracked a significant MHW event in the North Atlantic tropical ocean. We show this event was unprecedented, at the surface and at depth. It peaked in the north-east in May, spreading south-west to reach the Caribbean by autumn. In the east and centre parts, the MHW remained within the surface layers, while in the Caribbean, it reached deeper levels due to warm waters advected by equatorial eddies.

Considering the significant impact of salinity changes in dense water formation, we investigate the salinity changes in the Barents Sea during the past 3 decades. Our results highlight the recent freshening and its drivers in the northern and southern Barents Sea and show its impact on the density of the waters exiting the Barents Sea.

A record low sea level of -153 cm, 34 cm below the previous minimum, was measured in the Bothnian Bay in November 2024. This extreme event was caused by a strong and long-lasting windstorm that followed an unusual track. The BAL MFC NRT physical forecast system was able to accurately predict this sea level event 3–4 days in advance. However, forecasts with longer lead times failed to predict the record low sea level, although they did indicate a significant drop in sea levels during the storm.

This work analyses the propagation of the 2022 marine heatwave from the surface to 2000 m depth of the water column in the Mediterranean Sea. The results show that the temperature anomaly during the summer of 2022 varies between 0.88 and 2.92 °C. However, this heat stored in the surface layer is distributed in the water column during the following fall. This warming may enhance variations of the circulation of the surface and deep currents, which in turn may have an impact on the climate.

Differences between datasets also invite us to continue with efforts to sustain multi-platform observing systems from open-ocean to coastal ocean waters.

Depending on the location, depth, and oceanographic situation, bottom water of Tallinn Bay can be used as an energy source for seawater heat pumps until the end of February, covering the major time interval when heating is needed. Episodically, there are colder-water events when seawater heat extraction has to be complemented by other sources of heating energy.

Satellite data show that the event was record-breaking in terms of basin-wide intensity and duration. In this research we analyzed the marine heat waves (MHWs) that occurred in the IBI domain during the year 2022. Also, we shed light on the first steps of learning how MHWs behave under the ocean surface through the 2022 Bay of Biscay events. Our results show at least two extreme MHW events for the Bay of Biscay and the Celtic Sea for the year 2022. Moreover, we found that there is a seasonal modulation in mean MHW depth for the Bay of Biscay.

A noticeable cold spell occurred in Eastern Europe at the beginning of 2022 and was the main driver of intense deep-water formation and the associated transport of nutrients to the surface. Southeast of Crete, the availability of both light and nutrients in the surface layer stimulated an anomalous phytoplankton bloom. In the area, chlorophyll concentration (a proxy for bloom intensity) and primary production were considerably higher than usual, suggesting possible impacts on fishery catches.

In the water column the increase of anthropogenic CO2 concentrations leads to migration of the aragonite saturation state from 600 m in 1985 up to 400 m in 2021.

Aim of the Oxygen Deficiency Index (ODI) blueprint is to inform about the water-quality in the North and Baltic Seas by using observations and model-simulations. The ODI helps us to calculate the probability if low-oxygen conditions might occur, with low ODI values indicating a low risk and vice-versa. We show that the ODI is able to forecast oxygen deficiency zones between 30 to 75 days. Important points in our study were the simplicity of application, deployment and an easy interpretation.

Recently the satellite SSS from SMOS was developed in the Arctic region. In this study, we first evaluate the impact of assimilating these satellite data in an Arctic reanalysis system. It shows that SSS errors are reduced by 10–50 % depending on areas, encouraging its use in a long-time reanalysis to monitor the Arctic water cycle.

We used data from automatic weather stations on 16 glaciers to show how clouds influence glacier melt in different climates around the world. We found surface melt was always more frequent when it was cloudy but was not universally faster or slower than under clear-sky conditions. The results provide important information for future BGC-Argo deployment, i.e. important regions and the number of floats.

During all of the top 10 windstorms, wind speeds exceeding the local 99.9th percentile cover at least one-third of the land area in this high-population-density region. These 10 storms followed frequently observed cyclone tracks but have intensities 5–10 times the mean values for cyclones affecting this region.

This modelling study describes a methodology for describing pollutant discharges from ships to the sea. The pilot area used is the Baltic Sea area and discharges of bilge, ballast, sewage, wash water as well as stern tube oil are reported for the year 2012. This work also reports the release of SOx scrubber effluents. This technique may be used by ships to comply with tight sulfur limits inside Emission Control Areas, but it also introduces a new pollutant stream from ships to the sea.

The method uses basin-scale EOF modes, calculated from the long-term model statistics. Atlantic Waters carry heat and salt towards Arctic. The goal of this study was to study how the heat flux changes with its journey to the north. It was shown that despite the fact that there is some connection between variability of the heat flux near the shores of Norway and heat fluxes in the northern part of the Fram Strait. There are different processes governing this variability, which results in a different tendencies in the southern and northern regions of the study.

We present here a seasonal atlas of the Barents Sea including both temperature and salinity for the period 1965–2016. This atlas is curated using several in situ data sources interpolated thanks to the tool DIVA minimizing the expected errors. The results show a recent "Atlantification" of the Barents Sea, i.e., a general increase in both temperature and salinity, while its density remains stable.
